This matters because alliances remain America’s greatest advantage. Russia can project force brutally, but it does so largely alone. China can marshal scale, but it lacks a true alliance system. The United States, by contrast, commands a dense network of partners that multiplies its power far beyond what its military could achieve in isolation. The prospect of conflict there is conceivable, but not inevitable.
