What if the way we practice charity is part of the problem? In this video essay, I reflect on aid, philanthropy and why Africa doesn’t need more "Band-Aid" solutions, but instead deeper, empowerment-rooted approaches to development. Welcome back, friends and fellow critical thinkers. This video was inspired by a book that fundamentally shifted how I think about charity: When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert. Through my experience working in the social and community services sector, and through research across Africa, Australia and the global aid industry, I began questioning one-sided models of charity that prioritise giving over outcomes, and activity over long-term transformation. This is not an argument against compassion, humanitarian assistance or support during a crisis. It is an invitation to rethink: · charity vs development · short-term relief vs long-term outcomes · helping vs partnering · intention vs impact We explore concepts like True Charity, the Band-Aid effect and why development must be rooted in local agency, accountability and political economy realities.
