Wisdom literature is one of the most ancient and popular literary genres of the ancient Near East. To name just a few of the best sellers: the Mesopotamian Instructions of Shuruppak, dated to the mid-third millennium BC, the Egyptian Instruction of Amenemope, and the biblical Book of Ecclesiastes and Book of Proverbs. In this talk, Prof. Nili Samet introduces Near Eastern wisdom literature - its formation, its development throughout the ancient Near East, and the religious redaction it went through. Prof Samet elaborates on how scholars reconstruct the creation of proverbs which were later included in the Book of Proverbs, and on scholars' opinion about the traditional ascription of the book to King Solomon? Prof. Nili Samet teaches Bible and Assyriology in the department of Bible at Bar-Ilan University. Her research interests include the study of the Bible in its ancient Near Eastern context, Biblical and Mesopotamian Wisdom and Lamentation literature, Sumerian language and culture, and Biblical Hebrew.
