I travelled to the southern edge of Europe to explore the vast tunnel network hidden inside the Rock of Gibraltar, and to try and understand why countries are willing to defend certain places at all costs. Carved deep into the limestone is a secret military world made up of hospitals, command centres, and kilometres of tunnels, built to ensure Gibraltar could never fall. Gibraltar’s importance has never been about its size. It has always been about location, control, and power.
