And every time we discover it is too heavy, too fragile, too maintenance-hungry, too complicated, or just not what the infantry squad actually needed. For a country that can field stealth bombers and aircraft carriers, building a consistent DMR platform has turned into a never-ending beta test. The real problem is not just hardware, it is identity crisis. Is the designated marksman a mini-sniper, a precision rifleman, or just a regular guy with a slightly fancier optic and a PowerPoint slide explaining why he is special? The U.S. Army keeps oscillating between 5.56 vs 7.62 NATO debates, obsessing over optics, suppressors, fire control systems, and now the Next Generation Squad Weapon like that will magically solve doctrine. Meanwhile near-peer threats are standardizing squad-level precision rifles and calling it a day.
