US President Donald Trump slammed NATO in a new Truth Social post Wednesday evening, following an afternoon meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. According to reporting from The Washington Post, the president hinted at discussing the option of the US leaving NATO during his discussion with Rutte. "NATO WASN’T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON’T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN. REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!" Trump posted online. “It’s quite sad that NATO turned their backs on the American people over the course of the last six weeks when it’s the American people who have been funding their defense,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday during a press briefing. Leavitt said Trump planned “a very frank and candid conversation” with Rutte in the White House. Pulling the U.S. from NATO is “something the president has discussed,” Leavitt said. Trump has long been a NATO skeptic and has been especially angry in recent weeks at alliance members for declining to take part in his attack on Iran.
