We tried to dethrone the Sapphire using a 1500-hp Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, and it didn’t work. We tried again using a Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 — and the 5-passenger EV luxury sedan left the Supercharged Hemi for dead. This time, it could be different. Our test Lucid is equipped with optional Pirelli PZero Trofeo RS tires, which will give it a launch advantage relative to our last tests. And the Corvette is equipped with the ZTK track package. Its big wing adds aerodynamic drag, which will slow it down — but at the expense of downforce, which will likely help it put its power to the ground. But chiefly, ZTK includes extra-grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires — and so this is, GM says, the quickest variant of the C8 Corvette on an untreated surface. GM claimed a 8.675-second ¼-mile performance on VHT with the base ZR1X and an 8.95-second run for the ZR1X ZTK on asphalt. Let’s see if our runway test can recreate that performance. Meanwhile, the last Lucid Air Sapphire we tested on a VHT-prepped drag strip managed a 9.002-second run, which means the Corvette *could* be quicker on VHT. But it only did a 9.1-second run on regular pavement: will the grippy Pirellis help it beat the Corvette? We’ll find out. And for perspective on the difference between a “fast car” and the world’s fastest-accelerating cars, we’ve brought along the hottest hot-hatch you can buy in America, the 328-hp, all-wheel drive Mk8.5 VW Golf R. And the quickest and most powerful small BMW, the 523-hp 2026 M2 CS. We’ll give the two “fast cars” a big advantage: the Volkswagen will have a football field’s head start, and the M2 will start at the same time as the 1200+ horsepower cars, with one less football field to cover.
