Brendan has been in prison ever since he was coerced into confessing to the crimes. In August 2016 a judge ordered the release of Brendan after ruling that his confession had been coerced and involuntary. However, the state of Wisconsin appealed the decision and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit blocked Brendan’s release. Now, a new petition hopes to get Brendan back home to his family. Brendan’s story is not an isolated incident. It’s estimated that roughly 10,000 people are wrongfully convicted in the U.S. each and every year for crimes they didn’t commit. These wrongful convictions mean that the real perpetrators may still be out there and that we all lose when the criminal justice system we rely on becomes corrupt.
