The Naver Cafe "Giving Joy Sharing Happiness" manager followed a 5,000km trip across China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and traveled with me on a planned course from October 15-26, 2025 (12 days). Day 6 At 9:00 a.m., we departed from Pachu to Kashi. The Tian Shan Mountains unfolded outside the right window throughout the journey, and the breathtaking Danxia scenery was captivating. Danxia refers to the independently formed peaks and steep rock formations of red sandstone, due to weathering and erosion over a long period of time. These formations are called "Danxia Mo" (丹霞之貌). We stopped at a rest area offering the best views of the Danxia Mountains, and took advantage of a secret passage known only to "Giving Joy" to admire the breathtaking scenery of the Danxia Mountains. The next day, we headed to the Pamir Plateau near the western border, so we needed to obtain a border crossing permit, which required a wait of about an hour and a half. Kashgar City (喀什古城) We arrived at the square in front of the Qingjin Temple in the old city of Kashgar at 5:50 PM. Before visiting the Qingjin Temple, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of the Kashgar City. Kashgar, also known as Kashgar, was a crossroads on the Silk Road, where East and West first met, and a hub of international trade. It was an oasis city where the entire city was a large market. 86% of the population is Uyghur. Idkah Mosque (艾提尕尔清真寺) Located in Kashgar Square, Idkah Mosque boasts a history of over 500 years, and is the largest mosque in China and the center of Islamic activity in Xinjiang. Kashgar Old City Bazaar Passing through the bazaar, you'll find plenty of interesting sights to see. Day 7 Today, we depart for Karakul Lake, the westernmost point of China, the gateway to the Pamir Plateau in Central Asia, the most anticipated destination of this trip. From Kashgar, at an altitude of 1,300 meters, we gradually ascend the Karakoram Highway (KKH). Despite being a highway, the road conditions are not very good. The Pamir Plateau is comprised of the highest mountain ranges on Earth, including the Himalayas, Tian Shan, and Karakoram. With an average elevation of over 5,000 meters, it's also known as the "Roof of the World." There aren't many restaurants along the route, so we'll have lunch at 2:40 PM. Continuing along the Karakoram Highway, we'll reach Pakistan. After driving 200 kilometers from Kashgar, we arrive at Karakul Lake (喀拉库勒湖), at an altitude of 3,600 meters, at the entrance to the Pamir Plateau, at 3:50 PM. Karakul Lake (喀拉库里湖) Behind the lake stands Muztagh Ata (慕士塔格峰, Muztagh Ata), 7,546 meters high. Now we're heading back to Kashgar, stopping by Baisha Lake along the way. Baysha Lake Set against the backdrop of the white sand dunes of Baisha Mountain (白沙山), Baysha Lake is a massive artificial lake. Day 8 We head to Shache. Amanisa Khan Tomb Amanisa Khan was the queen of the Yarkand Kingdom in the 16th century. She is said to have unified Uyghur music. The dome roof is Mongolian-style, and the windows are Manchurian-style. Yarkand Khanate Tombs The Yarkand Khanate was the last Uyghur kingdom, lasting approximately 200 years from the early 16th century. Jinhuyang National Forest Park Now, imagining the golden Jinhuyang Forest, we head to Zhepu County. Jinhuyang National Forest Park, located west of Zhepu County, is a beautiful desert oasis with a natural zelkova forest. It is designated as a 5A scenic spot, the highest classification. The park is so vast that to explore it, you must use a shuttle bus or horse-drawn carriage. The reflection of the zelkova trees in the lake is a work of art. The turquoise waters of the mighty Yarkant River glisten in the sunlight, making the zelkova forest even more breathtaking. As the sun sets, we head to Yecheng (葉城, Yecheng). Yecheng is the starting point of the Xinjiang Highway, an important road connecting Tibet and Xinjiang. Xinjiang, Nanjiang, Beijiang Xinjiang, meaning "new territory," has an area 16 times the size of South Korea. Xinjiang is divided into Beijiang in the north and Nanjiang in the south, based on the Tian Shan Mountains that run through its center. This time, we traveled to Nanjiang.
