500 Year Old Method For Sawing Your Own Lumber!

In the log cabin build, one of the few things I didn’t make entirely with hand tools was the lumber for the roof — the rafters and battens. This time, with the outdoor kitchen project, I want to challenge myself by doing every part by hand, including the lumber. But how do you actually do that? I’ve been experimenting with different methods and this one seemed like the most effective. The pit saw was certainly hard to come by, but thankfully Nils Ögren helped me out by forging a handle for it. Sawing the boards wasn’t particularly hard, the tricky part was sawing straight, as you probably noticed. But my editor Stevie and I got better at it over time. The sawdust wasn’t really a problem either, as long as you had the right angle.
