Choosing the right dog for your family isn’t about breed, size, or looks, and getting it wrong can lead to serious behavior problems. In this episode of Better Human Better Dog, I show you how to choose a dog based on energy, lifestyle, and pack dynamics, before problems ever begin. When I meet the Collier family, they’re searching for their first dog with a typical wish list. But what they don’t realize is that choosing a dog based on appearance or trends is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. The wrong match creates instability, confusion, and behavioral issues down the line. So I shift their focus from looks to energy. By evaluating both the family and the dogs through pack position (front, middle, or back) I help them understand what kind of dog they actually need. I introduce three very different options: Eva is sensitive and deeply connected, Matilda brings calm and stability, and Billy is active, athletic, and full of potential, but requires leadership. And I choose Billy for a reason. Because the right dog doesn’t just fit your life, they challenge you to become better. After adoption, the real work begins. I guide the family, especially their son Lincoln, to understand that excitement needs boundaries, and leadership must come before affection. Through consistency and structure, he begins to build confidence and step into the role his dog needs.
