During the Republic of China era, China was divided by warlords, and frequent wars caused widespread displacement and hardship. Her grandparents, seeking a better life, smuggled themselves across the ocean to Vietnam. They survived by selling noodles and tea... After half a century of peaceful life, the Vietnam War ended, and the Communist Party of Vietnam came to rule the south. Meanwhile, anti-Chinese sentiment intensified. Nearly 80% of the property of Chinese in Vietnam was confiscated, and conflicts targeting Chinese became increasingly frequent. To survive, Sara and her family of 18 were forced to embark on another arduous journey of escape. They boarded a cargo ship bound for Malaysia with other illegal immigrants. After nine days of turbulent sailing and near-death experiences, the family finally arrived safely in Malaysia. They lived on a small island with other escapees for over a year. They decided to go to Switzerland, where the Swiss government accepted them.
