Torrents of molten lava burst out of the giant crater, moving as fast as 37 miles per hour (60 km/h). In a matter of hours, lava rivers reached the city and consumed 15% of its infrastructure. The flames engulfed residential buildings, roads, and even the airport runway. Chaos descended on the city. More than 400 thousand people were forced to leave their homes, fleeing from lava, suffocating fumes, and fires. According to official data, at least 147 people lost their lives, with hundreds of thousands facing truly tragic consequences of that day. Nyiragongo is a giant volcano with the largest active lava lake in the world. Its magma is incredibly fluid and fast-moving. Any eruption can turn catastrophic. And in 2002, it displayed its destructive force in full. But the most troubling part of this story is that this devastating eruption is only one piece of a much larger process. The reason for such violent activity lies deeper. Nyiragongo is located at the very heart of one of the most unstable regions on Earth. Here, the African continent is literally being torn in half. A massive tectonic rift is slowly but relentlessly ripping the continent apart. And it is this tectonic activity that fuels volcanoes like Nyiragongo. Scientists are convinced that one day this rift will give rise to a new ocean on our planet, and what happened in Goma was only a prelude to much larger events.
