But in light of the atrocities he committed (Nanjing Massacre, etc.) the League of Nations, and particularly the United States, tried to limit this expansion by refusing to trade key resources, and placing embargoes on trade with Japan. To the Japanese, this represented meddling in their affairs, and made war with USA inevitable. The Japanese hoped that the attack on Pearl Harbor would cow the USA into staying out of Japan’s business and keep him out of the war, allowing Japan to expand throughout south-east Asia and acquire the resources (oil, etc.) that it needed. Up until this point, USA had largely stayed out of the various wars occuring in Asia and Europe, but will that be the case after Japan’s sneaky lil’ attack…?
