On 3 June 1989, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, leader of the Iranian Revolution and founding Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, died aged 89. The government announced that the late Ayatollah was to be honoured with 40 days of national mourning and a state funeral. Between 5 and 6 June, ITN's cameras filmed millions of Iranians joining in the public display of grief and making the pilgrimage to the Musalla in northern Tehran where Khomeini's body was displayed ahead of its burial. Cameras rolled as the most senior clerics and officials of the Islamic Republic (including the country's current Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei) led the funeral prayer.
