On 14 August 1989, Northern Ireland marked 20 years since the deployment of British troops, as the violence of the Troubles entered its third decade. The preceding months had seen an increase in armed activity from both republican and loyalist paramilitaries, with 1989 becoming one of the bloodiest years of the 1980s. The British military reinforced its presence in anticipation of further bloodshed.
