Bethlehem lies only a few kilometres from Jerusalem, yet for many Palestinians it may as well be another world. Movement is heavily restricted, the Palestinian economy struggles, and tourism depends largely on Israeli operators. Many visitors arrive on buses from Israel, visit the Church of the Nativity, take photos at the separation wall, and then return across the checkpoint without spending much time or money in Bethlehem itself. This is the daily reality of life in the occupied Palestinian Territories. I explore Bethlehem on foot and by bike, filming how the city looks today and speaking with local residents who have grown up in the shadow of the West Bank barrier. I visit the Church of the Nativity, the surrounding historic streets, the separation wall, military watchtowers, and Checkpoint 300, and spend time at Bethlehem’s Christmas market as the city begins its seasonal celebrations. This Bethlehem documentary looks at how daily life in the West Bank is shaped by the Israeli occupation, the wall, and the politics of the Israel Palestine conflict, as well as by the religious sites that make Bethlehem an important destination for travellers to the Holy Land, including those on Christian pilgrimage. I meet Jehad, a boy who offered to show me around his neighbourhood near Bethlehem. Through him I see how politics filters into childhood in Palestine. His perspective reveals how normalised the conflict has become for the younger generation. The wall itself has become a symbol. Israel justified it as a security barrier intended to prevent attacks, but for Palestinians it represents control and the fragmentation of Palestinian life. For visitors it is a reminder of the separation between West Bank Palestinians and Israel. Artists have painted murals along the wall, turning it into one of the most photographed sites in the Palestinian Territories. The contrast between sacred sites and the physical infrastructure of occupation is stark, and a hallmark of the modern Holy Land. Bethlehem is one of the most famous holy cities on earth. For Christians it is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus. For Jews it is tied to King David and the roots of their messianic tradition. For Muslims it is the birthplace of the prophet Isa. Pilgrims have been coming to Bethlehem for centuries, drawn to a place that carries deep religious significance in the Holy Land for billions of people across Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. As one of the most important sites in the Israel Palestine region, Bethlehem remains central to faith, history, and the story of the Middle East. Bethlehem depends heavily on tourism. Until 2023, thousands of visitors came here each day, yet local Palestinian businesses saw little benefit. Most tours are organised by Israeli companies, and many visitors stay in hotels on the Israeli side of the wall. The local Palestinian economy has suffered as a result, and many young people have few opportunities. Palestinian Christians in particular have been leaving the Palestinian Territories in large numbers, citing economic pressure, lack of freedom of movement, and limited prospects. This has reshaped the Christian presence in Bethlehem, one of the most important cities in the Christian world.
