Jerusalem is one of the most contested and sacred cities in the world, claimed by both Israel and Palestine as a capital, where history, politics and religion collide and shape geopolitics. In this episode, I cycle into the Holy City to see how centuries of conflict, faith and identity play out on its streets. Sacred in all the Abrahamic religions, Jerusalem's Old City is a maze of ancient alleyways, where the Jewish Quarter, Muslim Quarter, Christian Quarter and Armenian Quarter press right up against one another. Within its walls lie some of the most sacred sites on earth: the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried. These holy places sit at the heart of the “status quo” agreements that have kept a fragile balance in Jerusalem for centuries. First imposed by the Ottomans in the 18th century and later reaffirmed under British and Israeli rule, the status quo determines who can pray where, and even forbids the movement of a single ladder outside the Holy Sepulchre without the consent of all the Christian denominations inside. On Temple Mount, as it's known by Jews, or Al-Aqsa, Muslims maintain religious control through the Jordanian Waqf, while Jews are allowed to visit but not to pray, a restriction that continues to fuel fierce political and religious debate. Outside the Old City walls I visit East Jerusalem, where Palestinian communities live under Israeli control. In neighbourhoods like Sheikh Jarrah, Palestinian families face the constant threat of eviction as settler organisations seek to claim property. Sheikh Jarrah became a global flashpoint during the 2021 Jerusalem crisis, when protests over forced displacement spread across the city and beyond, sparking wider unrest. I met Palestinian activist Saleh Diab, who shared his own story of life in a neighbourhood caught between courts, settlers and police. I also explore how Jerusalem’s symbolism extends far beyond its borders, why it is sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians alike, and why the city as a whole has become a central battleground in the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Jerusalem is a city where ancient traditions, modern politics and competing national aspirations overlap. Understanding Jerusalem today is vital if you want to understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The international community remains divided over the future of Jerusalem. Many governments support the idea that East Jerusalem should one day serve as the capital of a Palestinian state, while others insist it must remain under Israeli control. This ongoing dispute keeps Jerusalem at the centre of global diplomacy, Middle East peace talks and a trigger point for wider unrest across the region. This film is part of a wider documentary journey through Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, documenting stories along the way.
