Black People: What Are We Doing to Each Other at Work? Lately, I’ve had far too many conversations with Black employees who are experiencing discriminatory hostile work environments—not at the hands of white managers, but from Black leaders, directors, and managers. This is disappointing and unacceptable. Black leaders, you must do better. It is critical to be fair, professional, and ethical—not just to all employees, but especially to your Black subordinates. If you are treating your Black employees worse than your white employees, that is illegal and could be considered discrimination. You can and will be held accountable for it. To my Black professionals dealing with this—it is not okay for your Black manager to mistreat you, verbally abuse you, or treat you unfairly compared to your white colleagues. If this is happening, document it.
