Fischer was renowned for his opening preparation and made numerous contributions to chess opening theory. As White, Fischer almost exclusively played 1.e4, calling it "best by test". He was one of the foremost experts on the Ruy Lopez. As Black, Fischer would usually play the Najdorf Sicilian against 1.e4, and the King's Indian Defense against 1.d4.
