Today's training session is a little different. While I'm working on basic obedience with this incredible Bulgarian Karakachan, I want to share a crucial piece of history that every owner of a working dog should hear. To truly understand a dog like this—a Livestock Guardian Dog bred for centuries to be independent, loyal, and formidable—you have to understand the forces that tried to wipe it from existence. In this video, I'll read from some notes and explain the calculated policies under communist regimes, like the one in Bulgaria, that targeted these dogs. We'll cover: Why strays were killed: To create an illusion of state-controlled order. Why farm and livestock guardian dogs were specifically targeted: They were essential to private farmers and shepherds—the "rural class" that stood in the way of total state control over the food supply. Killing the dogs was a way to break the people. How pets and hunting dogs were also eliminated: They were viewed as "bourgeois luxuries" or tools of self-sufficiency, both of which were threats to the communist state. The survival of the Karakachan is a testament to the shepherds and farmers who defied the state to preserve their heritage and their way of life.
