Arnold began his scoring career through collaborations with director Danny Cannon. The two became friends in school where Cannon initially asked Arnold to score his short films. In 1993, Arnold scored Cannon’s The Young Americans (Cannon, 1993), which both marked their major feature film debuts and produced the song “Play Dead” (written by Arnold with singer Björk), which rose to No. 12 in the UK. After Young Americans, Arnold continued scoring films including director Roland Emmerich’s films Stargate (1994) and Independence Day (1995). In 1997, Arnold joined the James Bond film series for which he scored five films: Tomorrow Never Dies (Spottiswoode, 1997), The World is Not Enough (Apted, 1999), Die Another Day (Tamahori, 2002), Casino Royale (Campbell, 2006), and Quantum of Solace (Forster, 2008). He also co-wrote the main theme songs to both The World is Not Enough (“The World is Not Enough”) and Casino Royale (“You Know My Name”) as well as the end credit song for Tomorrow Never Dies (“Surrender”). Arnold’s other scoring credits include the films Zoolander (Stiller, 2001), television shows Sherlock (with composer Michael Price, for which they won a Creative Arts Emmy; created by Gatiss and Moffat, 2010–present) and Good Omens (dir. Mackinnon, 2018).
