Democrats turn on Schumer amid government shutdown fallout

The president accused Schumer of losing control of Senate Democrats, saying, “He thought he could break the Republicans and the Republicans broke him.” In another jab, Trump added, “He was a pretty talented guy — he’s lost his talent.” But beyond attacks from the White House, a growing number of Democrats are openly questioning Schumer’s leadership. Former Obama senior advisor David Axelrod predicted Schumer’s time as party leader may be nearing its end, saying, “My guess is that he won’t be leader of the party in 2027, after this election, unless something really surprising happens.” Polling data underscores the challenge. A Pew Research survey conducted in September — before the government shutdown began — found Schumer is the least popular Democratic Senate leader on record, with his approval underwater even among members of his own party. Public frustration among Democrats has only intensified in recent days after eight Senate Democrats broke ranks to support a compromise bill to reopen the government — a bill Schumer opposed. Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts told CNN, “He’s got eight Democrats going rogue here. He himself voted against them. That’s not leadership — not at a time when we desperately need leadership to stand up to Donald Trump.” Progressives are also joining the criticism.
