Retirement can trigger the same thing. Some people chase risky moves to “catch up.” Others avoid decisions. Others freeze and hope it works out. Quick note: I don’t do sales videos. No products. No referrals. Just the checklist I use. In this episode, I lay out **5 rules that actually matter**. This is the system I built after retiring from American Airlines, and after seeing the shocker that hits hard: logging into your company pay site and seeing a big fat ZERO. ### The 5 Rules That Actually Matter **Rule 1: Stabilize Cash Flow** Before you touch the portfolio, stabilize your monthly cash flow. The goal is simple: a dedicated cash buffer that covers **12 to 24 months** of spending. That buys time and reduces the risk of selling long-term assets at the wrong moment. If you have a pension, treat it like gold for cash flow. **Rule 2: Health Is Wealth** You cannot enjoy retirement in an unhealthy state. I share my 8-year health journey that started at age 55 when I hit 300 pounds, and why protecting your health is one of the most important parts of protecting your retirement. **Rule 3: What’s Your Plan** Not a vague idea. An operating plan. DIY or AUM. Taxes and Roth conversions. Withdrawal strategy (fixed vs dynamic). Budget realism. Medical planning. Long-term care awareness. Retirement punishes vague plans. **Rule 4: The Meaning of Life** Retirement isn’t about stopping work. It’s about starting the right work. You need purpose, structure, and meaning that isn’t tied to a paycheck, or the freedom turns into a vacuum. **Rule 5: Home Plate** Retirement is a household transition. Space, routines, expectations, and decision-making all change. This is where I introduce a concept I call **Separate Roof, Same Team**. Some couples stay legally married but live separately or spend long stretches apart. Not scandal. Adaptation. And I’m not saying retirement causes divorce.
