But that’s not all - Halsin also will always have Wild Shape: Cave Bear prepared, even if he’s not a Druid. And while you might think that doesn’t matter since you need Wild Shape Charges to shapeshift, you can gain Wild Shape Charges through the Shapeshifter Hat, which then allows Halsin to Shapeshift while not even being a Druid. This opens up a ton of possibilities for Multi-classing Halsin. 11 levels into Fighter lets you use Improved Extra Attack to get three attacks per Action while a Cave Bear, and the feat: Resilient: Strength actually gives Halsin bonus strength while in Cave Bear form. Tavern Brawler also gives bonus damage while in Cave Bear Form. You can even cast Lunar Mend for free each turn with 11 levels into fighter because as long as you don’t have a level 2 spell slot - it’s completely free to cast. These are spells that he can cast completely for free - no spell slot required - which is insane. These spells include Healing Word and Thunderwave. Healing Word is amazing since it costs a bonus action, and since it doesn’t cost a spell slot - it’s free healing every single turn. Not to mention Thunderwave is also completely free, only costing an action. This alone makes Halsin pretty amazing as a companion. However, these spells are no longer free if you obtain a second level spell slot. For example, if you put one level into Sorcerer or Wizard, both Healing Word and Thunderwave will no longer be free, and will cost a level one spell slot. So to keep these spells free, make sure not to take a level in any class that will give you a second level spell slot. Halsin also gains Call Lightning for free at Druid level 5, and it won’t cost spell slots - meaning you can lose concentration of Call Lightning and it wouldn’t matter - you can just cast it for free again. However, if you obtain a level 4 spell slot, the spell will go back to normal and cost at least a level 3 spell slot. You could get away with 1 Tempest Cleric / 5 Circle of the Land Druid for free call lightning fun, but you’d need to be careful not to get that 4th spell slot as you level up. Halsin also gains Misty step for free at Druid level 3, and it also won’t cost spell slots, letting you cast Misty Step an unlimited number of times out of combat, and as many times as you have bonus actions during combat. It’s actually pretty insane - but it also loses its “free” property as soon as you gain a level 3 spell slot. With these free spells, there’s probably some pretty OP Halsin builds that could be made. And next up are Gale’s exclusive abilities - out of all the different companions Gale has the most unique bonuses and abilities that are only available to him. First off, there are a number of items that only Gale can acquire. The first being the very rare Ring of Evasion, given to Gale by Tara during the first Long Rest taken after Escaping the Nautiloid, however, this cutscene will only occur during a Gale Origin run. Tara gives Gale this ring as a gift in order to feed the Arcane Hunger he’s experiencing, however there are much better options than what is most likely the first Very Rare item you’d find. The Ring of Evasion allows you to use your reaction to succeed a Dexterity Saving Throw if you otherwise failed it - which is pretty great considering how many spells have a dexterity saving throw. The other item exclusive to Gale is the Shadow Lantern. This item is actually created by Gale, and he’s the only one who can craft it. Within Balthazar’s hidden room, which can be accessed by placing Karlach or Nere’s head into the pedestal, there is a ritual circle. Only Gale can combine a Dead Pixie and a Broken Moonlantern using this Ritual Circle to craft the Shadow Lantern. This Unique Moonlantern provides a Moonshield like other moonlanterns, but it also comes with the spell Conjure Shadow Lantern Wraith. This level 6 spell summons a Shadow with 24 HP and 13 AC. It has Necrotic Claws which deal 2d8 +3 Slashing and 2d4 Necrotic Damage. The Shadow also has Strength Drain which deals 3d8 Necrotic Damage and possibly leaches the target's strength by 3. This ability can be quite powerful because if a target has its Strength reduced to 0 it instantly dies. This can be crafted during a non-origin run as long as it’s done by Gale. #bg3 #baldursgate3 #baldursgate
