In Guédelon, in the forests of Burgundy, a castle rises, stone by stone, tier by tier. Why set themselves such a difficult task nearly a thousand years too late? This exercise in experimental archaeology will add to our knowledge of the Middle Ages. By pitting 21st-century theories against 13th-century experience, all this heavy lifting will smash preconceived notions and build a new foundation for understanding medieval architecture.
