Greek civilization gave birth to democracy in Athens, where citizens directly participated in political decisions and helped shape the course of their society. The Greek world was not a unified empire but rather a collection of independent city-states, called poleis, each with its own government, laws, and customs. Among these, Athens and Sparta emerged as the most powerful, representing contrasting approaches to society and governance. While Athens celebrated art, philosophy, and democracy, Sparta focused on military excellence and strict social order. Greek culture profoundly influenced Western civilization through its achievements in architecture, with magnificent temples like the Parthenon showcasing the elegant Doric and Ionic orders that would influence architecture for millennia. The Greeks also excelled in sculpture, creating lifelike statues that captured the human form with unprecedented realism. The festival of Thesmophoria, celebrating Demeter and Persephone, was an important women-only religious celebration that gave women rare autonomy.
