I recently came across a comment on a random Instagram post that said “people back in the 19th century didn’t have house pets” and well, that’s just plain wrong. I believe owning pets is probably more common now, but as long as people have lived around animals, they have had special pet ones that were kept around purely for fun. The 19th century is no exception to this. In many instances, middle and upper class children and young women were encouraged to keep pets as a way to learn about animals and gain responsibility.
