This led to a peace treaty that confined the Vikings to the Danelaw, securing Wessex's survival. In the following years, Alfred transformed his kingdom through significant military reforms, including the creation of a network of fortifications known as the burh system, and improved the kingdom's finances and legal codes. Beyond his military and administrative prowess, Alfred was a remarkable scholar and patron of learning who laid the conceptual groundwork for a unified English state, earning his place in history as the founder of the English nation.
