The arrival of the Mongols into the Islamic world brought horrific destruction at an immense scale. Those who wrote at the time of Chinggis Khan’s devastating conquest of the Muslim Khwarezmian Empire present the Mongols as a punishment sent by God. Yet the progeny of Chinggis Khan in 3 of the 4 Mongol Khanates ultimately converted to Islam. The first Mongol prince known to convert was Chinggis’ grandson Berke, Khan of the Golden Horde.
