How SS General August Schmidhuber Ordered the Death of 5,000 Civilians in the Balkans August Schmidhuber, an SS General of Nazi Germany, orchestrated one of the darkest chapters in Third Reich history, responsible for over 5,000 civilian deaths across the Balkans. Through so-called “anti-partisan operations,” his forces destroyed villages, executed civilians, and deported Jewish families.
