Well it turns out that more often than not, they're grown rather than synthesized chemically. The first such antibiotic was penicillin, discovered in 1928 by Alexander Flemming. Penicillin had a long and winding history that lead to it's eventual discovery, but even after it was discovered, it took more than a decade to be industrialized.
