Makoko is a sprawling, self-built community on stilts, often dubbed the “Venice of Africa.” Home to an estimated 85,000 to 250,000 people, Makoko is a world apart: a maze of wooden homes, narrow waterways, and dugout canoes, where fishing is the lifeblood and resilience is a way of life.​ But life here is dangerous. Residents face constant threats of eviction, lack access to clean water and sanitation, and live under the shadow of government demolition efforts. Despite this, Makoko thrives.
