French TV accused Americans of abusing the French healthcare system, and I know it's not true. If you’ve seen headlines or TV debates claiming Americans are moving to France for “free” healthcare, I dispelled every myth they threw at me. In this breakdown, I stood up for Americans who are following the rules, paying in, and just want a better quality of life in France. Watch as I walk through each claim made on TV and actually break down what really happens when you apply for a French visa: the need for private health insurance before arrival, the 9% social contribution many US retirees already pay on their global income, and the reality that if your income is below roughly €23,500 a year you’re unlikely to qualify for a visa at all. I also explain the grey areas in the Franco–American tax treaty, why medication and doctor visits feel cheaper (without being “free”), and how new proposed laws aim to clarify contributions—not punish genuine retirees. Safe to say it got a little heated, but very quickly the media myths fall apart.
