Malta is a small island nation in southern Europe. Famed for its rich history, including some of the oldest megalithic temples in the world, its breathtaking coastline, and charming villages, in this travel guide we're going to show you the very best of Malta, including top attractions and hidden gems. From dining at Mediterranean restaurants to sampling local snacks and discovering some of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Europe, there's truly something for everyone to discover in Malta. We'll start by spending a day in Valletta, Malta's historic capital. Lined with cobbled lanes, steep steps, and surrounded by fortifications, it's no wonder that this city has been used as a filming location over the decades. Then we'll head to Mdina, the silent city and Malta's former capital before we visit Ħaġar Qim, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We'll end the day at Marsaxlokk, a quaint fishing village known for its iconic blue boats. The next day we'll spend time in the Three Cities, and most notably Birgu, where we'll learn more about the history of Malta and its churches. At sunset we'll take a traditional wooden boat back to Valletta. For the final day in Malta we'll discover Gozo, the second largest island in the archipelago of Malta, and much more rural. There we'll rent a scooter to discover the hidden gems and highlights of the island; including the capital Victoria, the salt pans, and the famous basilica.
