Mullvad Hides VPN Traffic Inside HTTPS With QUIC Obfuscation

WireGuard VPN traffic gets blocked instantly by state censorship systems in China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Iraq. The protocol never prioritized stealth, making detection trivial for deep packet inspection systems. China's Great Firewall fingerprints WireGuard immediately. Russia's TSPU infrastructure kills it dead. Qatar and Saudi Arabia deployed AI-powered DPI in late 2024 specifically targeting VPN protocols. German surveillance company ipoque announced WireGuard detection capabilities in January 2019, selling these tools to authoritarian regimes. Their DPI library lets governments identify and block privacy traffic before connections even establish. WireGuard's UDP packets on port 51820 create unique handshake fingerprints that censorship systems recognize instantly. Mullvad shipped version 2025.9 on September 8th with QUIC obfuscation for WireGuard on desktop platforms. Three days ago they released version 2025.8 for Android and iOS with identical censorship resistance. The implementation tunnels WireGuard UDP traffic through HTTP/3 using the QUIC protocol, making encrypted VPN traffic look identical to regular web browsing. QUIC started as Google's project to accelerate web traffic and became HTTP/3 in June 2022. The protocol uses UDP instead of TCP, eliminating handshake delays. Mullvad exploits the MASQUE tunneling spec (RFC 9298) to proxy UDP through HTTP servers. State censors see HTTPS web traffic while the VPN tunnel hides inside that envelope. Blocking all HTTPS would collapse commerce, banking, government services, and basic internet functionality. States depend on encrypted web infrastructure their populations use, creating protocol-level protection. WireGuard inside HTTPS looks like reading news or checking email. Enabling QUIC obfuscation requires updating to the latest Mullvad version and selecting QUIC under VPN settings.
