About the story: Hans Isenmann was a member of the notorious 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking—an elite Waffen SS unit that helped execute the Nazi regime’s racial war in Eastern Europe. After joining the Hitler Youth and becoming indoctrinated in Nazi ideology, Isenmann volunteered for the SS in 1939. His path would soon take him deep into the horror of Operation Barbarossa and the Holocaust in Ukraine. Following the Wehrmacht into the Soviet Union, Isenmann and his platoon participated in brutal massacres in cities like Lwów, Berdichev, and Tarashcha. He personally admitted to executing over 300 civilians—many of them women and children—during roundups conducted in coordination with Einsatzgruppen and local collaborators. In 1943, he also took part in the public hanging of civilians in German-occupied Yugoslavia. After the war, Hans Isenmann was captured by the Soviets and tried during the Kiev Trial of January 1946, often referred to as the "Kiev Nuremberg." He was sentenced to death for his role in the murder and torture of thousands. On January 29, 1946, just 23 years old, Isenmann was hanged in front of 200,000 people in Kalinin Square. This public execution was a powerful symbol of postwar justice—and the last such event in Kiev’s history. His death, witnessed by survivors and the city’s citizens, served as a stark reckoning for the crimes committed in Ukraine during the Holocaust and Operation Barbarossa.
