Video Description

Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: Louis Collard’s story is one of radicalization, ambition, and betrayal during one of the darkest chapters of Belgium’s history. When Nazi Germany invaded Belgium on 10 May 1940, the country collapsed in less than three weeks. Under occupation, the Nazis relied heavily on local collaborators to impose their rule. Among the most committed was Louis Collard, a young, intelligent Rexist militant who quickly climbed the ranks of the fascist movement. After founder Léon Degrelle left for the Eastern Front, Collard became one of the central figures within Rex. From offices in Brussels and Charleroi, he coordinated propaganda, helped recruit informants, worked with the Gestapo and SD, and oversaw violent repression against Jews, Resistance members, and political opponents. His Brigade B became notorious for raids, arrests, and brutality carried out in support of the Nazi occupation. In August 1944, as the Germans retreated and Belgium’s liberation approached, Collard played a decisive role in one of the most infamous atrocities of the war: the Courcelles massacre. Acting with Victor Matthys, he ordered the arrest and execution of twenty-seven Belgian civilians as revenge for the killing of a Rexist mayor. This act sealed his fate. After fleeing through Germany and Austria, Collard was captured in 1946 and returned to Belgium, where testimonies exposed the extent of his crimes. Following two major trials, he was sentenced to death. On 10 November 1947, Louis Collard was executed by firing squad for his role in mass murder, collaboration, and terror during the Nazi occupation.
