Happy Nigerian Independence Day! We're marking the occasion by sharing this historic report, broadcast days after Nigeria's independence became official. This film features towering figures in Nigerian history including the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello; the "father of Nigerian nationalism", Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe; Chief Obafemi Awolowo; and the first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. ITN's cameras captured the national mood in cities such as Enugu and Ibadan as well as Lagos, and observed the full scale of the handover ceremony and the celebrations attended by Princess Alexandria on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.
