(19 Apr 1970) RR7016A RHODESIA CHURCH VERSUS STATE In the 1970 general elections in Rhodesia, premier Ian Smith's ruling Rhodesia Front Party swept the board, winning all 50 European seats in the new 66-seat House of Assembly. The elections were the first to be held since Rhodesia proclaimed itself a republic at the beginning of March. Opponents of his regime have seen the victory as another step on the way to a South African-style racially-separated nation. Sandy Gall questioned Mr. Smith on this and other topics, and then went on to investigate the position of the Roman Catholic Church in Rhodesia, which is an increasingly vocal opponent of the new constitution and such recent legislation as the Land Tenure Act. One of the most outspoken critics of the Salisbury regime is Bishop Donal Lamont, of Umtali, who's declared that the real terrorists are not the guerrillas who cross the Zambezi, but the framers of the new constitution.
