Video Description

Welcome back to Locomotion in Shildon, where Anthony Coulls tells the story of Sans Pareil—Timothy Hackworth's pioneering steam locomotive which would go up against Stephenson's Rocket (and other locos) at the Rainhill Trials in 1829. Sans Pareil—meaning 'without equal'—was a worthy contender but suffered a few problems during the Trials. However, its performance was good enough to attract a sale, and the locomotive performed a variety of duties in the ensuing years. This episode was filmed at Locomotion in Shildon.
