Saudi Arabia has gone from a brand new host on the Formula 1 calendar to a country that could one day own the entire sport. Since the first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021, the kingdom has spent billions to make itself central to F1’s future. Their deal to host in Jeddah is one of the most expensive in Formula 1 history, Aramco has become a global partner whose logos cover every broadcast, and Aston Martin F1 is now officially the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team thanks to massive sponsorship and direct investment. Saudi’s Public Investment Fund has already bought a big stake in Aston Martin’s car company, and rumors keep building that a full buyout of the F1 team could be next. But that’s only part of the plan. Saudi Arabia is building a new permanent F1 circuit at Qiddiya near Riyadh, designed as a futuristic motorsport hub that will replace the Jeddah street track. They’ve started their own FIA-backed Formula 4 series to develop young Saudi drivers, and they’ve poured money into McLaren through separate investments. All of this creates pressure points that make Formula 1 increasingly dependent on Saudi money. The big question is whether this is just sportswashing or a step toward something much bigger. Bloomberg has already reported that Saudi’s PIF tried to buy Formula One outright for more than 20 billion dollars. Liberty Media turned them down, but the offer is still on the table, and Saudi officials openly admit that owning an F1 team or even the sport itself could be part of their future.
