SOLVED: How We Found 8-month-old Baby Sandra and her Mother Submerged in SUV

36-year-old Whisper Owen and her 8-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarty, were reported missing after last being seen on July 15th, 2025. 33 days later, we brought them home. For over a month, their family and local law enforcement searched for answers, but with no significant leads, the case stalled. The family reached out to Adventures With Purpose in the hopes that our specialized team could help locate Whisper’s silver 2006 Chevy Trailblazer that had a broken headlight and damaged driver’s door. During our initial conversations with the family, we learned several important details: Whisper had a history of stroke level high blood pressure, did not have a valid driver's license, and had an active warrant out of Sacramento, factors that were critical in helping us understand the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and in narrowing down our search grid. Using the details provided, we started mapping out the most probable routes and locations Whisper might have been. Throughout the day, we stopped at more possible locations and split up to clear as much ground as possible, with her brother Richard stopping at local businesses to request camera footage from the night she went missing. Our theories bounced around, and we cleared even the possible self-harm locations just to be sure. We ended the first day with a plea to the public: please check your security cams from that night. After that, law enforcement started taking the case more seriously and was able to get a cell phone ping right at a canal's edge. They quickly deployed a search unit to scan the area, but no success in locating Whiper, Sandra, or their SUV. With the help of local, Chris Waller, and more information from Richard, AWP made the trip back to California 10 days later to help continue with the search. Within 10 minutes of putting our boat and sonar in the water, we were able to identify a target under the bridge that strongly resembled the shape and size of a vehicle. Collaborating with Angels Recovery Dive Team, and lead diver Juan Heredia, Juan was able to dive and confirm it was her vehicle, and that at least one adult person was inside the vehicle. Once the vehicle was positively identified, we followed protocol and notified the local Sheriff's Department, who dispatched deputies and a dive team to the scene. Whisper and Sandra were removed from the vehicle, and the vehicle pulled. While this was the most difficult outcome imaginable, we are grateful to have been able to provide answers to their family with all those who supported and participated in this investigation and recovery.
