SOLVED: Missing 15 Years Underwater | The Case of Robert Long

Robert Long, a 62-year-old man from Miller's Place, Long Island, was last seen on December 21, 2010. After leaving a local liquor store, he and his white PT Cruiser vanished. In the years that followed, his family continued the search in their efforts to find him. Exploring with a Mission, sponsored by Adventures with Purpose, traveled to New York to apply our search methods to this long-standing cold case. The search was focused on the Cedar Beach boat ramp, a location Robert was known to frequent. This presented a challenge, as the ramp is a high-traffic area, with an estimated 100,000 vessels launching annually. The team launched their inflatable boat and began a systematic sonar search of the waters off the boat ramps. Soon after, the sonar equipment registered a significant anomaly on the screen. The reading indicated a vehicle-shaped object was located 19 feet below the surface, directly off boat ramp number one. With a clear target identified, our divers prepared to enter the water to make a visual confirmation. The diver descended into the water and approached the sonar target. The object was confirmed to be a white PT Cruiser, its body showing significant marine growth after 15 years of submersion in saltwater. Upon inspecting the vehicle's interior through the open front windows, the diver confirmed that human remains were present, confirming this was the final resting place of Robert Long. The Suffolk County Police Department was immediately notified of the discovery. Law enforcement responded to the scene, secured the area, and began their official investigation. A careful recovery operation was then planned. Due to the vehicle's fragile state after more than a decade underwater, a standard tow was ruled out to preserve the integrity of the vehicle for investigation. A local barge company volunteered their services, providing a crane to perform a lift recovery. Working in collaboration with the Suffolk County Police dive team, the operation began. Divers went down to attach heavy-duty lift straps to the vehicle's chassis. Once the straps were secure, the crane operator began to apply tension, slowly freeing the vehicle from the mud and silt. The PT Cruiser was then carefully raised from the depths and placed onto a flatbed tow truck on the shore, where it was covered by officials. This recovery brings to a close the fifteen-year search for Robert Long. It provides his family with the answers they have been waiting for. During the investigation, Robert's wife mentioned that she had always believed he might be at this location.
