Made in France, it didn’t make much noise when it arrived, but it showed the world what was possible. Lightweight, sleek, and ahead of its time, the Djet paved the way for future icons like the Lamborghini Miura. Its story begins with René Bonnet and ends with aerospace company Matra, but its legacy is all its own. Next, we head to California and Italy for the Apollo GT. This car was a dream come true for Milt Brown, who wanted to build an “American Ferrari.” With a body built in Italy and a Buick V8 under the hood, the Apollo GT had beauty, power, and ambition. Sadly, money troubles kept it from taking off. Only 88 were ever made, but collectors now hunt them down like lost treasure. Then there’s the De Tomaso Vallelunga, a feather-light sports car with smart design and racing DNA. Built in Italy with a Ford engine and Giugiaro’s sharp styling, the Vallelunga used a backbone chassis and mid-engine layout that would later inspire the Mangusta and Pantera. Fewer than 50 were made, and one even ended up in the Museum of Modern Art in New York! Finally, we look at the rare Innocenti 186 GT—a car born from an unlikely partnership between scooter maker Innocenti and Ferrari. Designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro and powered by a Ferrari-built V6 engine, it had all the makings of a hit. But a poor economy and limited support canceled the project after just two prototypes.
