If not by the general lack of discussion surrounding the game, then by the sales which Ubisoft themselves conceded was a disappointment. But why? How? I mean, this is a Star Wars product, and even games like Jedi Survivor, a game that was broken for many players on launch and even to this day doesn’t run the best, in spite of such a poor launch, was able to make enough to warrant a sequel that is rumoured to be in development. I’m sure your first guess is that, it’s Ubisoft, and of course, their reputation had a part to play here, but I think the explanation for the games financial failure is deeper than it being bad, because, for as much as no one wants to hear the words “good” and “ubisoft” in any sentence without “riddance” in the middle, Outlaws is a shockingly solid game. A Magnum Opus? No, but certainly not deserving of its fate, at least, when it comes to the games actual quality. I think the greatest misstep of Outlaws is the marketing, but the story is bigger than that, because, bad marketing alone can’t kill a title. As always, this is the result of a storm of decisions, and of course, those decisions are surrounded by the context of this being a Ubisoft game, which already frames peoples perception of the game. When it was first rumoured that Ubisoft was making an open world Star Wars game, many were skeptical, because Ubisoft in recent years had grown complacent, especially in open world design, where they once were at the forefront of innovation. Ubisoft made the blueprint for open world games with titles like Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry 3, but then became comfortable doing the same thing over and over, or at least, that’s what it’s detractors believe, and to most consumers, the same is true. I think most Ubisoft games are unique in their own ways, both for the better or worse, but when so many of them are pitched the same way; an open world with choices of stealth or combat, with neither system fully fleshed out, it’s easy to see a pattern, even if the games suffering from those assumptions have more beneath the surface. Star Wars is a series full of potential for games. Star Wars Outlaws is a game I never thought would be made. This Star Wars Outlaws critique will go over why I didn't initially make a Star Wars Outlaws review, and why I now felt the need to make a Star Wars Outlaws retrospective. This Star Wars Outlaws analysis will look at why the game didn't succeed, and how it could have, because if the marketing for Star Wars Outlaws explained anything, it was that there was more wrong with the game than the infamous Star Wars Outlaws face controversy that surrounded Kay Vess. The Kay Vess face situation has since died down, there is a new Star Wars Outlaws DLC called Star Wars Wildcard, and with this game now sitting next to the likes of the Star Wars Jedi series, let's see how a Star Wars Ubisoft title fares. This is Star Wars Outlaws Another Fumble, covering the Star Wars Outlaws gameplay, the Star Wars Outlaws story, the potential for a Star Wars Outlaws sequel, which as made clear by the video, I hope a Star Wars Outlaws 2 is around the corner, because it's clear Ubisoft has it in them to make a great game. They just need to be enabled.
