@floriangadsbyAbout
Florian Gadsby is a ceramicist working with stoneware and porcelain in North London — here you'll find videos that show process, how pottery is thrown and finished and finally glazed and kiln fired. The videos here show the processes behind his work, such as the throwing and trimming of tableware and more sculptural pieces. For more regular posts, including daily photographs and videos, make sure to follow over on my Instagram: (www.instagram.com/floriangadsby). I restock my online shop around 3/4 times a year, with about 300-400 pieces a time, if you'd like to receive a newsletter about when these go live you can sign up to my newsletter on my website, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter). I also leave the shop page online, even though it appears as sold out, it usually sells out in a few minutes time, just to give you an idea of what's available and the price range, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/shop). If there's anything else you'd like to know, please do get in touch!

Video Description
It’s not often that a piece comes out from the kiln that I can immediately identify as being one of those ‘special’ pieces. This is one of them, a seamed vase coated in a uniform layer of pale-green feldspathic crackle glaze. Its uniform save for a blush of oxidation on its back, resulting in a patch of darker glaze, it’s almost been singed, but in reality it’s the colour created just before the stark yellowing that can occur when some oxygen creeps in. Secondly, as this always comes up when I post videos like this, here’s why I glaze the inside first. This particular glaze dries into a soft and powdery layer. If I were to coat the inside first and then dip the pot like I do to coat the inside, the pressure needed to force the vessel underneath and then lift it out carefully, could very well be enough to damage the flaky glaze that covers the inside. Instead, I coat the outside first, then the following day, after the vessel has dried out, I pour 2-3 jugs worth of glaze inside, swirl it around and then tip it out. I find it easier to handle the exterior glazed surface gently, without damaging it, whereas handling the interior when so much force is needed, is much harder in my opinion. If your glaze contains more clay and isn’t damaged so easily by all means do it the other way around, but ultimately with this craft it’s a matter of figuring out the best way of doing it for yourself. What do you think of this vase? I always tell myself I need to create more pieces with the simple line adornment and this might be the vessel that convinces me. #satisfying #pottery #glaze #ceramics #handmade #artwork #vase
