Loyal to Stalin during the Great Terror of the 1930s, he later played a key role during World War II and emerged as a central figure in Soviet politics after Stalin’s death in 1953. Just three years later, in 1956, he shocked the world by denouncing Stalin’s crimes in his famous Secret Speech, launching the era of de-Stalinization. As Soviet Premier, Khrushchev’s leadership shaped the Cold War. He led during the 1957 Sputnik launch, confronted the U.S. in the 1960 U-2 incident, and nearly pushed the world to nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. His bold reforms and volatile style both advanced and endangered the Soviet Union, until his fall from power in 1964.
