To most Americans, this looks like paranoid propaganda from a hermit kingdom. But the brutal reality is that this hatred is rooted in a specific, devastating history that most of the Western world has completely forgotten. In the United States, the Korean War (1950–1953) is often called "The Forgotten War," sandwiched between the global glory of WWII and the televised tragedy of Vietnam. But for the people of North Korea, the war was an apocalypse. In this documentary, we uncover the sheer scale of the US bombing campaign—an aerial offensive so intense that it reshaped the psychological landscape of the Korean Peninsula. The Scale of Destruction Between 1950 and 1953, the United States Air Force dropped an estimated 635,000 tons of bombs on North Korea. To put that into perspective, that is more explosive tonnage than was used in the entire Pacific Theater of World War II—including the bombing of Japan. While Japan lost roughly 1% of its pre-war population to bombing, North Korea lost an estimated 12% to 15% of its people. General Curtis LeMay, head of the Strategic Air Command, later estimated that the campaign killed off nearly 20% of the population. The Myth of Precision While US military officials touted the "pickle-barrel" accuracy of their bombs to the press, the reality on the ground was very different. With the North Korean Air Force quickly neutralized, B-29 Superfortresses and other bombers flew virtually unopposed for much of the war. As the conflict dragged into a stalemate, targets shifted from military installations to urban centers and infrastructure. We discuss how cities like Pyongyang were 75% destroyed, while others like Wonsan were obliterated entirely. Napalm and Nature The script also details the horrifying use of napalm, a weapon that turned the wooden cities of North Korea into infernos. When the cities were gone, the targets shifted to the very land itself. In the later stages of the war, the US targeted hydroelectric plants and irrigation dams, flooding crops and threatening millions with starvation in a bid to force a surrender.
