Reality shattered Nazi delusions of creating a band of Aryan super soldiers. The SS was never as successful or racially pure as the Nazis wanted to pretend it was. Few SS divisions prove this as much as the 13th Waffen-SS Handschar Division. Formed in 1943, it was made up almost entirely of Bosnian Muslims that the Nazis bent over backwards to justify with their narrow racist ideology. A strange group constantly plagued by desertion and low morale, it deserves it place in history now just for howe they turned their guns on their fellow Bosnians, but became the only SS unit to turn against their Nazi leaders too. In this video, we’ll explore how the Bosnian Muslim of the Handschar SS Division became one of the most unique pieces of SS history, in a story of collaboration and mutiny in the Second World War. Bosnia On March 25th 1941, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia announced its alliance with Nazi Germany. Unhappy with this move, army officers rebelled, toppling the pro-Nazi Yugoslav government and declaring the alliance void. Hitler was furious, and issued Directive 25 for the destruction of Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia had been a creation of Versailles, a unification of territory carved out of the corpse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Nazis did not consider it a legitimate state. Germany forces invaded on April 6th and made short work of Yugoslavia. The Kingdom was partitioned into separate states, with the Independent State of Croatia under Dr Ante Pavelic taking its place. Bosnia was folded into this new Croatian state and, this being the Balkans, ethnic tensions immediately caused chaos.
